The Court Management Information System (CoMiS) is helping to digitalise court administration in different parts of Nigeria, making several court services more accessible to lawyers, litigants and other court users.
Although the systems operate under the CoMiS name, they are implemented by individual judiciaries and the services available vary from one jurisdiction to another.
Lagos State
The Lagos State Judiciary operates LagosCoMiS, which provides electronic services for court processes, case management, payments and affidavit processing.
The platform also allows electronic affidavits to be processed and subsequently verified.
Rivers State
The Rivers State Judiciary operates RivCoMiS, providing services including e-filing, e-payment, case management, affidavit processing and case tracking.
The platform also supports other digital court services, including virtual proceedings.
Oyo State
The Oyo State Judiciary operates CoMiS Plus, which provides access to services including affidavit and court-form verification, case searches and judicial resources.
Ondo State
The Ondo State Judiciary also operates a CoMiS platform for accessing digital court services.
Federal Capital Territory
The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory operates its own CoMiS platform, which provides access to court resources, filing guidance and other digital court services. The platform also provides manuals for lawyers, court registrars and private citizens.
What CoMiS Means for Court Users
The expansion of CoMiS platforms means that an increasing number of court-related processes can be handled electronically, reducing the need for repeated physical visits to court registries.
The services available, however, depend on the particular jurisdiction. Lawyers and litigants should therefore confirm the procedures applicable to the specific court where their matter is pending or intended to be filed.
The continued adoption of CoMiS represents another important step towards digitalising court administration and improving access to justice in Nigeria.
